Bladder biopsy is a procedure that involves removing a small piece of tissue from the bladder for examination. This is then sent to a pathologist for microscopic examination.
A bladder biopsy is usually performed after a cystoscopy that revealed an abnormality. Very often a narcotic and antibiotic are prescribed in order that this simple in office procedure is virtually painless. In addition, anticoagulation therapy is discontinued.
The pathologist, upon examination of the cells, can then determine whether or not cancer cells are present. The presence of cancer cells indicates bladder cancer. The type of cancer can be determined from the biopsy sample.
Other abnormalities may include:
- Bladder diverticula
- Polyps
- Infection
- Ulcers
