Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that restricts the flow of urine from the bladder. There are two growth periods that cause the prostate to enlarge. The first occurs early in puberty, when the prostate doubles in size. The second begins around age 40 and often results years later in BPH. As the prostate enlarges, it presses against the urethra like a clamp on a garden hose. The bladder wall becomes thicker and irritable and begins to contract even when it contains only small amounts of urine. These contractions cause the bladder to initially strengthen but if untreated the bladder muscle weakens and then fails to empty completely.
SYMPTOMS OF BPH - BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA
If you are experiencing any one of the following symptoms, you may be suffering from a common condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. Common symptoms associated with BPH include:
- Frequent need to urinate either day or night
- Sudden need to urinate referred to as urgency
- Interrupted sleep to urinate at night
- Weak, hesitant, or dribbling stream
- Need to strain or push bladder to urinate
- Pain or burning during urination
TREATMENT - Transurethral Needle Ablation (TUNA)
Transurethral needle ablation of the prostate (TUNA), procedure delivers low level radio frequency (RF) energy to the prostate, relieving obstruction without causing damage to the urethra. A small probe is inserted through the urethra and into the prostate. Two small electrodes are deployed into the prostate and a low level of radio frequency energy is applied. The energy heats the prostate tissue and shrinks it, relieving the obstruction while protecting the urethra and surrounding areas. To learn more about the TUNA procedure click here.
